A New Zealand Timbers Card Table by Anton Seuffert This card table from Anton Seuffert's workshop is a fine example of the type by NZ's premier colonial cabinetmaker. Card tables were a Seuffert speciality and his 1875 advertisements in the Auckland Herald quoted these tables at 10 pounds. Fifteen years later inflation raised the price to 11 pounds. While too small for card games, Seuffert probably named them for their use as business or postal cards depositories.…

An Height B. Dobbie Nz Native Timber Fern Specimen Cabinet made in Whangarei c.1880. This very important historical cabinet was constructed and carved by Height B. Dobbie (b.1852 England, arrived in Nz after 1875 and died 1940). Herbert Dobbie was an engineer, traveller, writer, botanist & expert wood carver. He travelled extensively on his penny farthing bicycle and on foot collecting ferns as he went in order to collate the first book on New Zealand ferns in 1880.…

A Beautiful Arts and Crafts Period Card Table by William Seuffert (1858-1943). This table is a unique piece and appears to be one of William Seuffert's later creations. It incorporates patterns used in earlier work by both William and his father, Anton. The simplification of the overall table design and squaring of the circular edging indicate a conscious development towards the modernisation of the table genre.…

A Top Quality George I Walnut Kneehole Desk with brushing slide (dressing kneehole). An unusual and rare feature is that the centre cupboard can be pulled forward to come flush with the drawers. The top edges have no "overhang", it has a flush or "caddy top" which makes the piece of furniture appear smaller. Drawers are lined in oak, the top is quartered with herringbone inlay around the drawers. Good rich dark honey colour richness overall. H.…

A Superb Anton Seuffert Card Table of Nz Native Timber with original label underneath. The base was probably added in England as most of the tops were manufactured here and sent to England without a base to save on shipping costs. Card tables were a Seuffert speciality and his 1875 raffle advertisement in the Auckland Herald valued card tables of this design at 10 pounds. Fifteen years later inflation raised the price to 11 pounds.…

Auckland Secretaire Chest c.1885 In Victorian times rimu was valued highly as a decorative timber, typified by its use in this Auckland chest as the feature timber, with kauri as the secondary timber used for unseen construction elements. This tall and handsome chest was clearly intended to impress with its stature and strong well-proportioned lines. Belying the restrained exterior however the top long drawer opens to reveal an exquisitely crafted secretaire with fitted drawers and compartments.…
